The early photographs in this book date to the 1940s and 1950s, a time of profound transformations in American society, a time witness to economic depression, war, and emergence into relative prosperity. For the Railfan, it was perhaps the best of times and worst of times. Old steam was passing away making way for new diesel. Diversity was commonplace with 5 major diesel locomotive builders offering different looking and different sounding products.
The B&O participated in this diversity and flux until 40 years after the end of WWII, the B&O disappeared into the CSX amalgam. The photographs in this Volume help illuminate what was unfortunately the regress of the nation's first railroad.
