The Nickel Plate was the place to be in the 1950s when the next headlight might be a pair of sleek PAs or a thundering Berkshire.
This book is organized chronologically. There's some excellent photography here with much more steam than first-generation diesels. Most passenger trains are pulled by ALCO PAs, but there is a nice two page down-looking spread of an elephant-eared Hudson pulling train #8 out of LaSalle Street Station in 1955.
