As of 1969 the most mileage that Santa Fe had in any one state was in Texas with over 3500 route miles. So large was the Santa Fe system in Texas that the company continued to maintain two subsidiary companies within its boundaries as late as 1965, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe in the east and the Panhandle and Santa Fe in the west.
