This volume summarizes Southern Pacific's experience with hood units (road switchers) in passenger service, beginning in the early 1950s.
Locomotive models addressed in detail are the Fairbanks-Morse Train Masters, ALCO RS-3 (Cotton Belt) and DL-701 (SP), demonstrator and emergency "protection" units, as well as Electro-Motive SDP45, GP40P-2, SD7, SD9 and GP9 models.
Numerous images in this book are repeated from earlier volumes, but the book itself is not a reprint. It follows the model of Volume 20, which reprised the passenger cab units. Coverage of the Train Masters is significantly expanded over that in Volume 1, which has been out of print for more than ten years.
