Go back in time to this seldom-visited nexus of operations and see how the Rock Island operated away from headquarters. Just about any diesel combination imaginable on the Rock is shown in full color and expertly detailed by fellow Oklahoman and friend Darryl McGee.
Most photographs were taken around El Reno, Oklahoma City and Medford, Oklahoma. The classic Rocket Freight era transitioning into the solid maroon and pinstripe era are the majority of the photographs. Included are many passenger train shots when anything could be seen on Choctaw Route trains and the remains of the Texas Rocket.
You will see the Budd RDC's, heavyweight passenger cars, plus green and silver express cars. Very few shots of the blue -The Rock era- are seen.
